Threadless New Today / Back Today + Made By (22/05/12)
Hide Your Arms 22 May 2012, 10:39 pm CEST
Sadly technology prevented me from blogging the sale as I would of liked to, however I am not back to normalish now. Just thought I’d briefly blog New Today / Back Today and some of my favourite Made By tees!
New today yesterday is Halfling and Wizard by Cool Johnny is a Calvin and Hobbes and Lord of the Rings mash up. I don’t like anything about this tee personally but obviously it’s been voted high enough to get printed.
I love when a tee I own gets reprinted, TARDamask by Rosemary Travale is probably one of the best, if not THE best Doctor Who tee that has ever been printed on Threadless. The colour and design is fabulous. Here is a pic of me rocking the tee taken by Sam Corban.
You want a whale and a telephone combined! You got it Call Me, Ishmael by Jason St. Peter has done this awesome surreal design black on this gorgeous ‘Lake’ coloured tee! Kinda looks more petrol blue from where I am sitting.
Back today of today is The Guest by Ralph Pykee Lambaco is a cool monotone tee which has uber amounts of cute factor. I love this tee and there aren’t many black and white ones I rate because I have a rainbow soul!
The two designers being showcased this week are Phil Jones and Julia Sonmi Heglund. I am just going to blog my two favourites today and will hopefully slip some in later on in the week.
Of Phil Jones’ designs my personal favourite is probably WAKE, it’s a crazy explosion on the brain and the eyes. I like nautical tees in general and this all over print is fabby!
I have NO idea how I haven’t seen this design by Julia Sonmi Heglund, The Venn of PB&J. It has jams, it has food with a face. it has everything a gal (or guy) could possibly need on a tee!
Wonderfull Hello Kitty skull tank top by Joby Cummings at Blure Collective

I am really digging this, nice work by Joby, hopefully Sanrio won’t
come knocking on Blure’s door with a C&D. I wish it was
available as a t-shirt and not just a tank top, but that’s just me,
Summer is coming and people want to get their arms out.

Mission: Vote For Winky Boo
Hide Your Arms 22 May 2012, 7:01 pm CEST
Winky Boo is part of Chase and LivingSocial’s “Mission: Small Business” for a chance to be rewarded with a $250k grant, but we need your help! In order for us to move forward, we need to get 250 votes (so you see, that’s where you come in but I’ll get to that in a second). First, let me explain to you a little about Chase and LivingSocial’s Mission.
They are rewarding 12 small businesses with a $250k grant towards our business to help us thrive and grow. There is a panel of judges that will be reviewing our information and our business plans and our plan on what the money will go towards. As I was sharing the voting information yesterday I was informed that voters aren’t able to view our business plans and only the judging panel can, so I want to just share with you Winky Boo’s plans for the $250k if we are lucky enough to win!
It’ll be slightly easier for me to speak in first person since I am Winky Boo and I am writing this blog (ha). I, Amy Fiedler, own and operate all aspects of Winky Boo. I am a one-woman company single-handedly running business out of my bedroom slash office above my parent’s garage. Aside from the psychological effects having your office in your bedroom does to you, being able to have this business grant would mean being able to open up an office space for Winky Boo and hire full-time employees. Currently my mother, who works full-time works as my assistant (for free) in-between working her very crucial job as a Nurse Anesthetist in an Operating Room at a hospital. I also (like most of a lot of the independent clothing company owers) work a full-time job as well every evening, so as some of you in similar positions can relate to, it becomes overwhelming and sometimes even can effect certain aspects of business when you’re a one-man/woman army doing everything.
Office space and employees are not the only reason at all why we’d be able to thrive and grow with this grant. We have much anticipated interest from retailers worldwide who just want “more” from us and currently we are unable to produce “more”. We can’t fulfill wholesale desires without funds to produce what would typically equal 1 years worth of printing for us in a month span. We also can’t successfully show to our interested larger chain wholesalers without the financial capabilities to do this and thus another reason why this grant would mean everything to Winky Boo.
So, what can you do to help? It’s simple.
Step 1: Head on over to Chase and LivingSocial’s Mission Small Business website. https://www.missionsmallbusiness.com/
Step 2: Click the login through Facebook on the main page in the bottom right side. (see below)
This will sign you in through your Facebook (you can only vote if you have a Facebook, and if you have more than 1 Facebook – EVEN BETTER)
Step 3: In the search boxes you want to search “Winky Boo” and for the State, plug in “New Jersey” (you do not need to put a town/city)
Step 4: Winky Boo will appear on the page and next to it you’ll see a blue button “VOTE” – click it!
Step 5: Now go to Winky Boo’s Facebook Page and comment with your name so we can place whoever votes for us in the running to win 1 or more free items from winkyboo.com. There will be more than 1 winner!
This literally takes less than 1 minute to do and will be so appreciated because every vote helps! We have 39 days left to get to 250 votes and we only have 20 votes – so please take a second to help my dream come true!!

TshirtContest.com up for sale, anyone want a ready made design competition?
Hide Your Arms 22 May 2012, 10:00 am CEST
When I write up the daily t-shirt releases in the morning I check over all the sites and see who has something new for us that day. Unfortunately today I found that Tshirt Contest have put themselves up for sale for an undisclosed price and are asking interested parties to contact them. I had wondered if something was up when there hadn’t been a release for a few weeks considering that they had typicaly been pretty reliable with their schedule, but I try not to tempt fate or get the rumour mill going by suggesting things on the site since it isn’t particularly helpful for anyone involved. I’d be interested to know what happened to bring them to this point, especially with the design competition world being as tough as it is, was this change caused by the marketplace or perhaps non-tee related issues?
I don’t have anymore details than you can gleam from the site, but they’ve got a decent back catalogue of designs (that I would presume to be part of the sale, though it’s not explicitly mentioned) and an attractive site so I’d have thought that there would be someone out there who feels that they can take the project on and make a success of it.
Review of WTF design at Design by Humans
Hide Your Arms 22 May 2012, 10:00 am CEST
A few months ago we at Mr Four Fingers decided to enter an illustration of ours into an ongoing online t-shirt design competition over at Design by Humans. Much to our surprise and delight we were lucky enough to have our WTF design chosen as a part of their daily winner competition.
DBH release a new print five out of seven days of the the week, so it was a couple of months until our WTF design was printed and released. Once we got our hands on it I was blown away by how well they executed the print. The original I gave them was a scanned ink watercolour illustration just under A3 in size and DBH were able to increase the size and still maintain the integrity of the original illustration. They were even able to accurately reproduce the pink ink spatters.
The design is printed on Heather Grey 100% Cotton DBH Premium Tee and fits well. It seems DBH have their own manufacturer but their cut and soft fabric is much like American Apparel. This design is a 3 colour oversize screen print. My associate received this particular package so I’m unsure of what packaging it was sent in but the last time I ordered from DBH, my t-shirt was sent in a sturdy clear plastic bag with large black logo printed on so you could see the t-shirt through the negative spaces. Chances are it was the same and hell it looks pretty cool.
I know from buying other DBH t-shirts that they normally print the artists name and/or logo on the t-shirt, either on inside collar or bottom hem. They never once asked us for anything so sadly for us they didn’t print any with our MFF name. That would have been nice. They did give us a wad of cash and 6 free t-shirts so we can hardly complain. I quite like their ‘smiley’ DBH logo stitched to the bottom hem line.
If you are interested in big illustrations from a variety of artists then head over to Design by Humans and grab this t-shirt and others for $20. They also have discounts all the time and interesting t-shirt deals like the Tee Grinder.

All hail our robot overlords!
Hide Your Arms 21 May 2012, 7:56 pm CEST
Robots are cool. I think that much we can all agree on, right? I mean, there’s been a fixation on robots for about the past 70 years, with sci-fi films and utopian visions of the future imagining that we’d all be living in space pods, served by robots wearing French maid outfits with pneumatic silver boobs. For some reason, robots just capture the imagination. They seem to connect with us as an image of our potential: eventually we will be able to master creating humanity (of sorts) and will render it in metal.
Which is why I like these two shirts by Design By Humans quite so much. They popped up in my inbox as part of a regular email from the site, and I was drawn to them immediately. You’ve got two separate designs here, I think. Halftone Robot by Old30Bastard is very much a hipster Transformer. It takes up the whole tee, and its shapes are angular and true to life. I particularly like that the robot’s head looks like its a repurposed boombox. At $15, you’d be criminal not to get this.
Then there’s the slightly more expensive ($20) Violin Bot. It’s cute, it’s quirky and it’s the sort of thing you’d see in Futurama. In fact, I’m not entirely sure a similar idea wasn’t in an episode of Futurama when Bender starts a band, playing himself like a washboard. BUt if anything that makes me want this thing more. It’s a beautiful design and it’s sure to bring a smile to people’s faces.
Costiness: $15/$20

Would I be right in thinking that this shirt at TeeFury by Ian Leino is something to do with Dr. Seuss? Those books are nowhere near as popular in the UK as the US so I could be wrong on this one but I get a feeling from the style that’s where the reference is coming from.

AnyForty x T-World Australian Invasion Series
Hide Your Arms 19 May 2012, 7:00 pm CEST
This collaboration has been quite a long time coming, teaming up UK
streetwear label AnyForty with
the worlds only t-shirt magazine, T-World, to release a t-shirt
series showcasing the best design talent from Australia. There’s
quite a few more designs in the collection, but there’s only so
much space on the blog, y’know?
It’s really impressive to see how AnyForty has been growing recently, there seems to be something new happening over there every day and they keep pushing themselves to greater heights. We all know that I’m a fan of T-world (even though I believe it has been shamefully bereft of references to HYA!), and it’s really cool to see someone of Eddie’s influence collaborating with a UK streetwear label when I would imagine it would have been more lucrative to partner with someone in the US (though clothing seems to be fairly global these days anyway, especially when you get towards the slightly more premium streetwear prices).
Each shirt is £30, and comes with a special 24-page edition of T-World that is specific to the t-shirt artist.

Chico Santana [Submitted]
Hide Your Arms 18 May 2012, 7:00 am CEST
Chico Santana was born in the dark corners of the LES in NYC. Young Chico came to us with only a Macbook and a Dream. A dream to rid the world of really bad casual wear.
Chico decided instead to put his Macbook to use. He made some Fresh designs and said some things that have been marinating in his head. And like a Bolt of Lightning from the Heavens. Chico knew what he was meant to do! He took those Fresh Ideas and made a pledge to use sweatshop free and made in the USA garments and turn them into the flyest sh*t in the history of the world.
Ladies and Gentlemen I proudly Introduce to you…The Latest, The Greatest, Too Sweet to be Sour. The Reflection of Perfection…
Andy: Thanks for the submission.

Everything on clearance at Typography Shop, go buy something now
Hide Your Arms 18 May 2012, 12:59 am CEST
Big news coming out of Typography shop recently:
We’re clearing the shelves of every single item in stock while we work on transitioning the line to a third party fulfillment site, possibly utilizing a print on demand method. It may be your last chance to pick up these designs silk screened for awhile. And you’ll save big time.
We’ll still be printing product for retail outlets, online resellers and flash sale sites, but won’t be carrying stock for the time being. We will let you know as soon as our designs are available online again. Having sold all over the world these past 4 years I want to continue to serve customers anywhere. We will re-launch the shop for the George Lois poster project, possibly with a small selection of shirts.
Patrick wanted to make it absolutely clear that Typography Shop is not closing, that’s not what this is, it’s just a change for the business to make it more adaptable so he can focus on different things right now.
Latest prints from Way Cool Tshirts [Submitted]
Hide Your Arms 17 May 2012, 7:00 pm CEST
We are a couple that a few years ago, realized our true passion was screen printing. In our small shop we follow “green” protocols and use only water based inks free from harmful chemicals or solvents, and garments made in factories that are sweat shop free, child labor free, and WRAP Certified.
Andy: With a name like ‘Way Cool Tshirts’ I wasn’t expecting much from this store, it’s the kind of URL that people buy for SEO value, but in reality here’s a couple making shirts the right way and doing it because they have a lot of passion for the subject matter they print, which is real nice to see.
